Intercom is back at it with a newer and better framework than RICE. No, I’m kidding. There isn’t any magic weapon. A good prioritisation framework:
1/ captures the preoccupation of the company. In their case it’s to create innovation (= build usage or defendability) while keeping on check investment and urgency (to be right on time w/ the market)
2/ aligns the different teams (especially the main stakeholders) on the criteria. It will save you a lot of further conversations
3/ and bonus point: it doesn’t use fake numbers to make itself sound more scientific than it is (yes I’m talking about you RICE 😅)

2️⃣ Reducing Product Risk and Removing the MVP Mindset

Have you ever created a MVP? Most product managers have not, because they join companies way after it was built. What you call an MVP is probably the first version of a new feature in an existing product with existing users… Framing it this way often leads to wrong scoping or building with low quality. Instead you should ask yourself what kind of product work you are doing, what is the level of ambiguity on the problem or solution viability, adopt strategies to derisk depending on the kind of users… and basically always “phase” your delivery (= faster impact, smaller risk, better tech work). The best product managers do three things: articulate what winning products look like, rally the team behind it and iterate on it until they get it right.
